The origin of the plague doctor mask
The origin of the mask dates back to the Middle Ages, but among the masks of the Venice carnival it is considered one of the most modern masks. The mask, along with hat, gloves and stick, was the complete costume of the plague doctor, a sadly famous figure due to the association with periods of great pestilence that plagued Europe and Venice, which was particularly subject to his large volume of traffic of goods and people.

One of the best Venetian Masks to wear or to hang
Nowadays this mask is certainly one of the most famous and recognizable of the Venice Carnival thanks to its long beak, round eyes and strong association with the history of the city. Of this mask, which we create entirely by hand in papier-mâché, there is the classic version, like the mask in the previous photo, and hand-decorated versions with drawings. This particular, terrifying and fascinating mask is ideal to wear both as a man’s mask and as a women’s mask but also as a decorative object to hang, as it contains in an exemplary way the history of Venice and its Carnival.
